PW: It’s a delicate thing, writing about sex. Seeing that you managed to smoothly pull it off, do you have any advice for how to approach penning a sex scene?
JA: Too often I’ve read starkly graphic depictions of sex thinking that they serve no purpose, that these cinematic representations do nothing to further the movement of the pieces they inhabit. Sometimes I wonder if the writers think they’re shocking us, which would not only be pointless but delusional on their part. That said, my critique gives me my approach: everyone knows how it’s done, the reader can supply the clinical details, so just make it serve the story.
