How did you come to the idea of exploring this theme in a medieval setting?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>CT<\/strong>: I chose the setting because the story deals with some pretty\u00a0touchy subjects; attempted drowning of a young child, a father pushing his kid\u00a0around, etc. When it comes to\u00a0kids, those things can be pretty hard to write\u00a0(and even harder to read), and it can often turn some readers off. Taking it\u00a0out of reality just slightly, putting it in a faux-Germanic 1400\u2019s-ish time period\u00a0allowed me to sugarcoat those scenes a little bit. It\u2019s a trick I learned from\u00a0reading a lot of George Saunders; wrap the serious in a\u00a0little funny (and a\u00a0slightly out-of-step world from our own) and it helps mainline the seriousness\u00a0past our gut reactions that might, in a normal setting, read as a little\u00a0raw,\u00a0or melodramatic, or over-the-top.
