BULL: <\/i><\/b>What do you think makes this “Men’s Fiction” -or- Why did you\u00a0send it to us?<\/i><\/div>\n

Rosales:<\/b> We’re all trying to write “People’s Fiction” first, I think. To appeal\u00a0to as many folks out there as possible\u2014hoping they’ll set the book\u00a0down, take their beer bottle up, and think a bit. But my work, and this\u00a0piece in particular, is also meant to investigate our ideas of manhood.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The boy’s uncle, Kiko, is a kind of hero to him. He may be a hero\u00a0within a value system some of us recoil from\u2014a macho, insecure,\u00a0aggressive and possessive one\u2014but nonetheless a value system that\u00a0brings with it a sense of ritual, of tradition, and clearly defined\u00a0sets of behavior easy for a boy to observe, to admire, and so to\u00a0follow. When the the boy’s sister leaves Kiko\u2014we get the sense that\u00a0Kiko and his kind of neighborhood “criminal” conception of manhood will\u00a0be exorcised from the boy’s life\u2014the boy mourns not so much the loss\u00a0of a person, but of an identity, and is frightened by a suddenly\u00a0nebulous image of self.<\/div>\n

We live in interesting times for men. Unlike more rigid times in our\u00a0past, we are free to define manhood as we wish. There is evidence all\u00a0over today’s pop culture that we enjoy an ironic distance from our\u00a0past, while we remain nostalgic for the old hats men once wore,\u00a0literally and figuratively.<\/div>\n

We can’t help but think of certain movies, certain stories, certain\u00a0drinks, as being “for men.” If I’d been brilliant enough to write a script like Tender\u00a0Mercies<\/i>, I’d have sent that. As soon as I wrote this humble story, I\u00a0sent it to you. And if I could send you a drink, I’d send you the kind\u00a0I’m drinking now– Stranahan’s, Colorado Whiskey. Neat.<\/div>\n
